Global trade shocks and geopolitical uncertainty implications for food security in emerging economies
The 11th OEET Workshop will be held on December 11–12 in Turin, fully in person or in hybrid format, and hosted by Collegio Carlo Alberto, a STAPLES project partners. The workshop will focus on the international structure of cereal trade and the complex interdependencies of global value chains, highlighting the vulnerabilities of emerging and developing economies.
The workshop is financed by STAPLES, a PRIMA research project, and will provide a platform to present results and discuss strategies aimed at strengthening cereal value chains in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region against external shocks.
Cereal trade is highly interconnected, as countries relies on each other for inputs, production, processing, and distribution. Shocks—such as export restrictions, conflicts, logistical disruptions, or abrupt price surges—can rapidly propagate, affecting markets and food security. Understanding these interdependencies will be essential to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen global food system resilience.
