On November 29th, the STAPLES project featured at the event “10 Years of the Turin Centre on Emerging Economies: Lessons Learned and Perspectives for the Future”, organized by the OEET (Osservatorio Economie Emergenti di Torino) in partnership with Collegio Carlo Alberto (CCA), the Department of Economics and Statistics “Cognetti De Martiis,” and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.
This dynamic two-day workshop gathered around 60 participants, both in-person and online, fostering meaningful exchanges on pressing global challenges.
STAPLES in Focus
During the session Emerging Economies in Global Value Chains, Alessia Amighini from the University of Eastern Piedmont and OEET, researcher in Collegio Carlo Alberto presented the STAPLES project, addressing critical food security issues in the MENA region, where reliance on imported cereals poses significant challenges. The presentation highlighted:
- The importance of understanding the entire cereal value chain—both domestic and global.
- The project’s objective to enhance the resilience of MENA’s food systems through multi-dimensional strategies and stakeholder collaboration.
Global Value Chains and Climate Risks
Chair Zaki, Chaired Professor of Economics at the University of Orléans and Lead Economist at the Economic Research Forum (Cairo, Egypt), provided insights into the intersection of global value chains (GVCs) and climate risks. His presentation outlined:
- The impact of physical and transition climate risks on GVCs.
- How GVCs influence environmental sustainability.
- The role of environmental measures in shaping GVC dynamics.
Engaging Discussions
Sessions were expertly coordinated to ensure thematic coherence, with a standout session moderated by Alessia Amighini and attended online by 20 students from the Globalization and Competitiveness: Globalization and International Trade course. Participants praised the workshop’s interactive format, which enabled in-depth scientific exchanges, robust discussions, and valuable peer-to-peer feedback. This event underscored the importance of collaborative research in addressing global challenges and advancing the resilience of emerging economies.
