MISSION

STAPLES is a PRIMA project dedicated to enhancing the resilience of Mediterranean and MENA food systems in the face of global economic instability. By delving into the complexities of external stressors from global value chains, STAPLES aims to empower local governments and economic stakeholders. Through innovative solutions and evidence-based recommendations, STAPLES aims at strengthening the cereal value chain, improving food security and stability.

ACTION

STAPLES’ primary activity involves implementing an integrated approach to address the drivers of change affecting the cereal supply chain in the MENA region, along with its vulnerabilities and dependencies. This approach encompasses various actors (public and private), stages of the value chain (production, logistics, services), and scenarios (business as usual, stress). Through three main pillars of action, STAPLES aims to achieve knowledge and innovation within a comprehensive framework.

ABOUT

STAPLES aims to enhance the resilience of Mediterranean and MENA food systems in the face of economic instability from global food markets. By understanding external stressors from global value chains, it aims to aid local governments and stakeholders. Through innovative solutions and evidence-based recommendations, STAPLES strengthens resilience along the cereal value chain, to improve food security.

Enhance Domestic Resilience

Developing strategies to bolster domestic cereal production and supply chains, thereby fortifying resilience against internal pressures and risks.

Improve International Market Resilience

Addressing challenges in international markets to enhance the resilience of MENA countries’ cereal trade, ensuring stability amidst global fluctuations and uncertainties.

Interdisciplinarity

The partnership covers a wide range of subjects and guarantees a consistent and fruitful match of knowledge.

Why MENA region?

MENA countries are particularly exposed to international shocks in cereals’ markets because they largely rely
on import to feed their population. A deep understanding of such external shocks and stressors and of the coping strategies is fundamental for: a) private actors, in order to promptly react and to adjust their plans accordingly; b) public actors, in order to design resilience policies and strategies.
In this context, the project aims at informing private and public resilience strategies through new evidence-based
knowledge that is created, systematized and spread on external stressors and shocks deriving from cereal global
value chains (GVCs) on the MENA region and on the feasible local solutions to address them, with a specific
focus on Morocco and Egypt.

Our Partners

Discover our key collaborators driving the realization of our project. With diverse expertise and collaborative efforts, we’re equipped to address the challenges inherent in the complex food landscape and food security issues across the MENA region. Each partner contributes specialized knowledge and unique resources, empowering our project to achieve innovative outcomes and make a tangible impact in the region.

Objectives

Understanding External Stressors

Generate a better understanding for governments and economic actors involved in the cereal value chain in the MENA region of the external stressors and shocks that derive from global value chains (GVCs) and threaten local cereal supply chain and food security.

Developing Resilience Strategies

Develop innovative solutions and evidence-based recommendations for strategies, action plans, and best practices that governments and economic actors of the MENA food systems along the cereal value chain can use to enhance system resilience.

Improve preparedness

Improve preparedness of governments and economic actors along the cereal value chain to anticipate and cope with external stressors by integrating new knowledge and data into a Decision Support System (DSS) for adopting solutions and best practices.
