Field study in Egypt
May 2025
Al Sharqiya – Egypt
In May 2025 researchers from the Università delle Scienze Gastronomiche di Pollenzo, in collaboration with the Confederation of Egyptian European Business Associations (CEEBA), conducted a field study in Al Sharqiya, Egypt, interviewing 36 local smallholders.
The interviews explored their experiences, knowledge, and challenges in cereal farming in order to be able to identify key factors that influence their productivity, particularly during periods of shock, providing insights into the needs and obstacles faced by smallholders, and facilitating the development of targeted interventions.
Enhancing smallholder resilience and market integration
Based on the findings, a range of context-specific solutions can be implemented, including the adoption of more sustainable agricultural practices, the facilitation of access to appropriate technologies, and the strengthening of market integration mechanisms.
By exchanging successful strategies and innovations, smallholders have gained valuable insights into improving their resilience and profitability, thereby contributing to sustainable agricultural development and food security within their communities.
